Born on the 1st of May 1925 David Brazil first
became a teacher of English, then a research fellow at Birmingham University and following this a staff member in the Department of English. From 1979 to 1983 he was a full-time lecturer there. He fully retired in 1986. Among his major publications are
- The Communicative Value of Intonation in English (19972), Cambridge University Press
- Pronunciation for Advanced Learners of English (1994), Cambridge University Press
- A Grammar of Speech (1995) Oxford University Press

Your readers may be interested to know that his surname is pronounced /ˈbræzɪl/ -- at least I think that is correct.
